Interesting perspective on the issue facing AZ. At least in the U.S., it seems as though the Trump Administration’s perspective has not been to increased the immigration restrictions for so-called “high-value” immigrants, but you never know when that policy may change. I don’t have enough experience with drug development to know if “virtual R&D” is, in fact, possible. However, I do know that despite the technological gains made in the last few years, nothing replaces being able to walk over to a colleague’s desk and quickly get an answer / discuss an issue. I wonder if the solution for AZ would simply be a single additional R&D office in a Eurozone country like Germany.

Very interesting write-up. Having spent a good amount of time within the beer industry, climate change is certainly affecting the production of hops. Production issues are particularly acute within the craft beer segment, which typically utilizes more exotic hops, particularly in “hop-forward” styles like IPAs. As you mentioned at the top of your post, there are now over 5,000 breweries in the U.S., of which most are producing hop-intensive styles and picky about what hops they use. It will be very interesting to see how growing problems in hop production impacts the “long-tail” of brewers that don’t have the operational and financial resources that Molson Coors has.

Very interesting write-up. I wasn’t aware of Cayuga or this issue and am surprised by Trump’s position, as I would have expected more of a “take our ball and go home” approach given his own strong isolationist tendencies. I think it would be interesting to learn what the margin difference between powdered milk and ultra-filtered milk are. I know very little about both, but if ultra-filtered is a high-ish margin product while powered milk is more of a low margin commodity, that $30mm revenue hit may be even tougher to make up through exporting to the Mexican/Saudi Arabian/etc. markets.

As a believer in comparative advantage, I’m against Canada’s supply management policy, particularly given that the country is a signatory of the North American FREE TRADE Agreement. Will be interesting to see how the situation progresses.

Interesting write-up. I read this post amidst the recently announced FCC plan to end net neutrality, and I wonder how that would affect BAM and related products. Given the overlap between ISPs and cable TV providers, one of the ways the Comcasts of the world might try to recoup
some of the dollars lost to streaming may be to charge users a large surcharge to access BAM content.

I think the in-person vs in-the-comfort-of-your-own-couch dynamic is interesting. It’s almost always a better game-viewing experience at home (or at a bar) given replays, variety of camera views, etc. However, it’s much less Instagram-able and I think the opportunity to tell all your friends on social media about how you went to the game will continue to be large factor driving in-person attendance.

Very interesting write-up. I think part of the problem is that the financial upside for better ingredient tracking is potentially limited and no one wants to be the one to go first. If better ingredient tracking truly influences consumer purchasing decisions, others will be quick to follow suit, eating away at any market share gains. And if it doesn’t actually matter to consumers, well, you’ve just wasted a good deal of money. Everyone is looking for someone else to be the guinea pig before committing to such a capital and operational intensive endeavor. I’ll be interested to see how this plays out, but I do have to say that, at least for me personally, it would be unlikely to affect my purchasing decision.

Interesting write-up. I think the question is less about investing in seeds “or” other water reduction technologies and more about “and”. Your post made it clear how water-intensive the beer-making process is and I think it’s important for ABI to do everything they can to better manage their water usage.

I think the trends in beer consumption are interesting. Globally, it’s a market grower, but in the U.S. it’s been flat to slightly down as drinkers become more health-conscious. I don’t think water usage will make a huge impact on consumer purchasing behavior but will be interesting to see how consumption trends continue.
